When Stacey met Glyn Rhodes MBE

During the course of my career, I have been lucky enough to meet lots of inspirational people, some with more well-known faces than others.

Yesterday I got the opportunity to meet an ex-professional boxer turned coach and promoter in the form of Glyn Rhodes MBE.

Sheffield born and bred, Glyn had 95 fights as part of his combined amateur and professional boxing career which saw him travelling across Europe until he retired in 1993.

Since retiring, Glyn has turned his hand to coaching and promoting a whole host of young up and coming talents as well as running the Sheffield Boxing Centre in Hillsborough for the past two decades.

Having met a few boxers in my time, through my work with the GB Boxing communications team in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games, I had a preconceived impression of how Glyn would be… He was as I thought, but a hell of a lot more inspirational!

On entering the Sheffield Boxing Centre, Glyn welcomed us with open arms and immediately we felt part of his boxing family. Seeing how his circuit training attendees idolised him was humbling and the whole time we were with Glyn we were smiling – such a down to earth man with charisma!

Nothing was too much trouble, he posed for photos, answered questions and was an overall pretty awesome bloke – even if he did mention his MBE a hundred times! Ha-ha.

Having seen and heard about how Glyn Rhodes has inspired a whole host of boxing amateurs and professionals, I think we should let him off boasting about his recognition from the Royals. He has a proven track record in transforming the lives of Sheffield youngsters who haven’t had the best start in life and giving them the chance to aspire to greatness.

I left with a skip in my step – pretty difficult given I had six inch heels on, but he put me in a great mood for the rest of the day.

His personality matched with his quick witted sense of humour were majorly infectious – everyone needs a Glyn ‘Showboat’ Rhodes in their life and if you attend his boxing centre you will not only enjoy exercising and getting fit – but mentally you will be re-energised too!

On writing this I know Glyn will probably be a little embarrassed, but that is just another fab trait of his – once you’ve met him, you get to meet the real him and feel like you’ve known him for years. He won’t think he’s an inspiration – but just doing a job and what he loves!

The Sheffield Boxing Centre offers a whole host of fitness classes for all levels and ages – check out the website:

Over and out!
