How to build your following on Twitter

One of the greatest signs of a successful Twitter strategy is a constant increase in the number of followers. To help your brand engage and attract more relevant accounts on Twitter, take a look at our 3 top tips.

  1. Increase the visibility of your profile

It may seem like basic stuff, but ensuring your profile is complete will make it easier for people to find you. This includes filling out the bio, location, website and artwork.

Username

If your ideal @username was already taken on Twitter, be sure your profile name reflects your brand within the 15-character limit available.

Bio

Your bio can also help grow your following, so make sure it counts! You only have 160 characters to describe your business, so keep to the point and sum up what your business does. It’s also a good idea to include relevant hashtags in your bio. For example, if you’re a local business, hashtag the city where you’re based, and don’t forget to link to your website.

Artwork

Your profile picture represents who you are and will be seen with every tweet you send, so it’s important that it looks professional and is sized properly – Twitter recommends 400 x 400 pixels. The same applies to your header image. This is the large image at the top of your profile, and will be the first thing followers see when they look at your page, so again it’s crucial the image is sized correctly and doesn’t appear pixelated – Twitter recommends 1500 x 500 pixels.

Finally, cross promote your Twitter profile on your website by creating a follow button/embedding your twitter feed. This will attract customers who are visiting your website to also follow you on social media. You can also link your Twitter account in your email signature and e-newsletters.

  1. Post attention grabbing tweets

Your Twitter feed moves fast and people are consuming information quickly. This means your tweets need to be frequent and stand out if they’re going to gain a good level of engagement and encourage new followers to connect with your brand.

To do so, define a Twitter content strategy that adds value to your audience’s experience. Try not to make your tweets too ‘salesy’ and instead share content that’s interesting and useful whilst remaining on brand. Tweet shareable content that will increase your chances of gaining new followers. For example, offer advice/tips on how to use your product, share industry news and talk about a new campaign.

It’s also useful to include an image where possible. Research has found that updates with images generate a whopping 313% more engagement than those without. You can attach up to 4 images in a single tweet, making it stand out more in the crowded timeline.

Twitter invented the hashtag which makes keywords and phrases more discoverable. Using hashtags correctly is a fantastic way to improve your searchability and allow more people to find your account. Use popular hashtags and be specific, but be careful not to use too many! Hash-tagging too many words within a tweet will put people off and you’re likely to lose followers as opposed to gaining them!

  1. Engage with your followers and expand your reach

To attract new followers, try and find people you think would be interested in your business and follow them first. They’re likely to return the favour and you could be targeting a potential new customer.

Don’t forget to regularly monitor your messages and mentions and reply to them where possible. This not only shows your account is active, it also shows you recognise your followers and have a good level of customer service. You can also join in twitter conversations where appropriate, to grow your community and again attract more followers.

Finally, another great way of expanding your reach on Twitter is to run a competition. A simple ‘RT to win’ will tap into new audiences and extend the reach of your messages, making your profile more discoverable.

Remember, gaining thousands of followers doesn’t happen overnight and will take time and patience. However, stick with it and you will eventually reap the rewards. Like any social media network, growing a targeted following takes time.
