10 years in the industry!

As my decade in the marketing industry approaches, I have been looking back at how the way I work has changed – through knowledge and  experience gained but also by adopting new advances in PR and Social Media.

At the tender age of 18 I joined my first full service marketing agency as a Junior Account Executive, this is where my passion for writing was born after always dreaming of becoming a Graphic Designer, I realised that words could be just as creative if not more expressive.

Working on a range of client accounts with the talented PR team, creating coverage reports, placing colour seps orders with national trade magazines, undertaking admin duties and handling the phones – all areas of my role now that I totally respect. Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference to a client.

Another big part of my role was faxing the teams press releases to relevant journalists, and magazine editors  – now most machines sit in an office collecting dust!

I also got my big break when I was given my first press release brief – to write a piece about a range of Christmas sauces for a locally based glass container manufacturer.

I’d never written a press release before in my life, but I was determined to impress the team and by the looks of it, I did.

Brief after brief was passed my way and after a year of more involvement in writing, client briefs and proposals I was given a  campaign to run with for a Sheffield dog charity.

I gained over £1million worth of national media coverage, even a full page edit in The Mirror, I was ecstatic and it adorns the front page of my portfolio to this day!

That wasn’t all I managed to secure for the charity, broadcast media also wanted to feature the Craik family, who had been given the UK’s first autism assistance dog – ITV’s This Morning,  regional news and  radio were all going crazy for a bite of the action.

The Sun, Daily Express, Prima magazine, Take a break, The Daily Record amongst many other  national titles  were on the phone, editors wanting exclusives – I was buzzing and even thinking back to this eight years ago I still get butterflies in my stomach!

Travelling through time to the present day, seeing media coverage in traditional outlets as well as online is still the best part of my job, and still gets me really excited about putting clipping reports together! (I won’t let anyone else in the team do them for me)!

Social Media has since taken the world by storm and we are in the midst of the digital age as new technological advances seem to be created every day and this is a exhilarating time to be in the marketing industry.

I am glad I get to work across digital and traditional platforms but there is just something about researching, drafting, issuing and seeing the results from a good old press release!
